Coaching Staff

Head Coach & General Manager

Jason Block

Coach Block has been in and around the game of hockey for 30 years. Prior to joining the University of Richmond, he was a coach for the Ramapo Saints hockey club in Monsey, NY, coaching U14, U16 & U18 teams. He was also a varsity coach at Northern Highlands Regional High School in Allendale, NJ.
 
Other coaching stops included St. Joseph Regional High School in Montvale, NJ, and the North Jersey Avalanche hockey club in Hackensack, NJ. 
 
Over the course of his time as a youth hockey coach, Jason has taught and mentored numerous athletes who have gone on to have successful careers in the USHL and NCAA. Notable team achievements as a head coach include an undefeated record in '13-14 at St. Joe's, and a 2013 Atlantic District championship with the Saints U14s, who finished the year 47-3-2 and were nationally ranked at season's end. Jason's teams also qualified for postseason play in 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014. 
 
This is Jason's 7th year as Head Coach of the Spiders.
 
Prior to coaching, Jason was a four year varsity letterman at Suffern High School in Suffern, NY, where he was a first-team All-Section and All-County defenseman, team captain, & Empire State Games participant. He continued to play collegiately at Binghamton University in Vestal, NY, and played travel hockey for the Ice Vault Bandits in Wayne, NJ, the Connecticut Yankees, and the Ramapo Saints. 
 
When he's not on the ice, Jason's free time is spent watching his favorite professional sports teams (the Buffalo Sabres, Buffalo Bills, & NY Yankees) and spending time with family and friends. Jason lives in Richmond with his wife Nikki, his son Brody, & their 3 pets.

Associate Head Coach

John Chukayne

Coach Chukayne has been involved in hockey for over 30 years. Before he joined the University of Richmond, he was a coach with the Richmond Royals youth hockey club. Beyond his role with the Spiders, John continues to work within the youth hockey community in Richmond and the surrounding area. 

Working with the Richmond Generals, John and his family continue to host billet players from across the United States and Canada and assist them in their journey to the highest levels.

Before coming to Richmond, John coached varsity hockey at Mayfield High School in Mayfield, OH, and has coached youth hockey with the Gilmour Academy in Gates Hills, OH and the Topeka Roadrunners organization in Topeka, KS.

Prior to coaching, John was a four-year varsity letterman and a co-captain at Mayfield High School, where he played wing. He is a graduate of Salve Regina University in Newport, RI, and spent seven years as an Army Officer before settling with his family in Richmond.

In his free time, John enjoys golfing and watching the Cleveland Browns & the Ohio State Buckeyes. John lives in Richmond with his wife, Michelle, and sons Rob and William.
